Sarah Champion, MP for Rotherham, and Mike Farrell, Rotherham resident and Chair of the National Allotment Society (NAS), recently delivered speeches at South Yorkshire WH Community, celebrating their inspiring work. Their efforts were also featured in the Rotherham Advertiser, with special recognition for the South Yorkshire WH Community's achievements.
In Rotherham, the South Yorkshire WH Community hosts a weekly Cook and Share Luncheon, using fresh fruit and vegetables grown on their allotment. The event brings together both new and long-standing residents, fostering a stronger sense of community.
Sarah Champion has tabled an amendment to the Planning and Infrastructure Bill — part of the Government’s broader planning reforms — aimed at making more land available for allotments and community gardens. This comes at a time when demand for allotments is surging nationwide, after decades of decline. It’s estimated that around 90,000 people across the UK are currently on waiting lists for a plot.
Champion has been working closely with Mike Farrell to campaign for these vital changes, highlighting the importance of allotments in promoting community wellbeing, sustainability, and healthy living.
